Josh’s Reviews & Rants #16 – Best of 2011 and Oh yeah…Marvel Sucks

It’s the New Year! I know you guys have missed me so I’ve decided to bring you guys a couple of things in addition to the usual rant and rave. Let’s start with those first, that way you can get some positivity before I take a tire iron to whatever’s bothering me.

Wonder Woman #1Wonder Woman – Brian Azzarello finally learned how to meet a deadline! The art is gorgeous, the story is unpredictable, and best of all, Diana Prince has a consistent characterization. This was definitely one of the comics to come out on the high side of the reboot. Pick it up. Check it out. And she has pants still. I know, I know, for some of you that’s a deal breaker. But for the non-mutants out there I doubt that’ll be a problem.

Locke & Key – Best Indie book out there right now. Joe Hill definitely knows how to write a comic even if he can’t necessarily get a novel right. If you like horror, gore, and character development, this is for you.

The Cape – AWESOME! Joe Hill didn’t write this one. It is based off a Joe Hill short story and has blown away all other Cape related stories (that just…awful show was pretty much what I was talking about). The Cape #1

Daredevil – I know, I know, I haven’t been happy with Marvel lately, but look at they’ve been doing. The House of No Ideas had to pull in a guy with good ideas to make Daredevil work and it actually accomplished something. It turns out, fans don’t want a circlejerk of tears coming from Daredevil. We actually want to see Matt Murdock…-gasp- happy. Waid gave us a Daredevil void of all that god-awful emo bullshit and boiled down Daredevil to exactly what we wanted out of him. We got a great comic that was a whole hell of a lot of fun to read.

All of these comics are worth your money, by all means. That’s why I’m recommending them! However, it is time…it is time…

Y’know, Marvel, I am getting tired of having to go over this with you. I really am. You guys are supposed to be the House of Ideas. Why are you recycling all of these old (and boring) stories? We’ve seen them a thousand times already. Phoenix is coming back. Don’t care. X-Men vs Avengers. Don’t care. Hell, Fear Itself was essentially just a long and boring Siege. You guys even did a sequel to the Kree-Skrull war. Why? What was the point of all that? Can’t you guys, your “Architects” come up with something that wasn’t pulled from somebody with talent? These guys are lauded as the best you have and the best they’ve got is X-Men vs Avengers. Get your shit together. I’ll be over here reading Daredevil when you’re ready to give me something good.
